Hypoallergenic Tooth Care Guide

I love when you share my recipes!

Allergies can be found in all places, including personal care items like toothpaste, mouthwash, and even floss. Here are some of the best tooth care products to use when living with allergies.
Best Hypoallergenic Toothpastes and Mouth Care Products

It is so important to take care of your mouth when learning to live with allergies and it’s something we don’t often think of when eliminating allergies from our lives!

Surprisingly, many allergens hide in the toothpaste, mouthwashes, and dental floss that we use every day. In particular, people with dairy allergies and coconut allergies need to be aware that dairy and coconut are in many toothpastes.

Dental products are not regulated through the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) like food and snacks are, making it more difficult to understand and navigate proper oral health with food allergies.

This article will help you make a good decision for you and your allergy needs to not only keep your mouth happy, but your dentist happy, too!

jar of earth powder toothpaste with a small sign that says top pick

EarthPaste Peppermint Tooth Powder – Best Overall Toothpaste

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes, coconut, soy, corn

Contains: Xylitol, use with caution if you have OAS

Perfect for all ages above 6 years old.

This is the most allergy friendly toothpaste on the market at the time of writing.

Filled with good things and none of the bad, including being free from SLS, no glycerin, no dyes, no artificial flavors, no glycerin, is totally vegan, and all natural.

EarthPaste is a toothpaste that uses two main ingredients to get your teeth clean: Clay and Xylitol.

Bentonite clay is a powerful cleanser that not only gently polishes the teeth, but also binds to bacteria and makes the mouth more alkaline, a good thing to prevent tooth decay!

Xylitol has been studied for years as a unique ingredient to help prevent tooth decay and maybe even restore tooth enamel.

They make two varieties, a toothpaste with silver and toothpowder without silver

I personally prefer the powder. You dip a moist toothbrush into and brush your teeth as normal. At first, it was strange to use a powder and not a paste, but now I prefer to brush my teeth this way! And the minty flavor keeps everything fresh.

container of kid's toothpaste with a small sign that reads for kids

Original Kid’s Xylitol Tooth Gel – Best Toothpaste for Kids

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes, soy, corn

Contains: Coconut derived ingredients, ingredients derived from birch, use with caution if you have OAS

This fluoride-free product is safe to use even if swallowed.

This kid friendly toothpaste is unflavored so even picky kids shouldn’t complain (too much!) about brushing their teeth. Free from dairy, eggs, and nuts (the most common allergens in kids), this toothpaste is safe to use.

It’s filled with xylitol, a known tooth decay prevention ingredient. Xylitol is called non-fermentable, meaning that the bacteria in the mouth cannot convert it to sugar to use as food and so prevents tooth decay.

It also has been shown to help prevent gum disease, and overall bacteria in the mouth. That makes it a super important ingredient to add to products, especially for kids!

This ingredient is derived from the birch tree, so if you have that allergy, please avoid this toothpaste.

box and tube of spry toothpaste with a small sign that reads best paste

Spry Toothpastes – Another great toothpaste (not coconut free)

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes

Contains: Ingredients derived from birch, ingredients derived from corn, ingredients derived from coconut, possible soy

A great toothpaste filled with health improving ingredients like xylitol and none of the bad. Free from SLS, triclosan, and parabens.

This is a great xylitol based toothpaste that my dentist recommends. Xylitol is non-fermentable, meaning that bacteria has a more difficult time using it as a food source and it helps to prevent plaque from sticking to the teeth. It also has been suggested it helps prevent gum disease and overall oral health.

Xylitol is a sugar that is derived from the birch tree, so avoid it if you have oral allergy syndrome. For those without OAS, xylitol is a great product to incorporate into your routine.

container of desert essence floss with a small sign that reads top floss

Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Floss – Best Floss

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes, xylitol

Contains: beeswax

This is the most allergy friendly floss around.

Dental floss is such an important part of dental care and one you never want to skip. Most floss is made from either nylon or polyester, both of which are hypoallergenic materials. The trouble comes in the form of the waxes coating the floss. Some brands are filled with artificial flavorings and fragrances, both of which can cause allergy issues.

That’s why I suggest this Desert Essence floss. It is made with PFA-free nylon which is a very hypoallergenic ingredient. They coat it with sustainable beeswax and add tea tree oil for the antifungal and antibacterial properties. They are nonGMO, USDA Organic, and made in the US.

To make flossing even easier, I recommend this flossing pick. It is refillable with your choice of floss. It helps to reach those back teeth and you aren’t throwing away plastic every day. I love mine!!

black water flosser with a small sign that reads water floss

WaterPik – Runner Up for Best Floss

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes, xylitol

Contains: No common allergens

Another good flossing option? A Water Pick! Water flossers are great for people who want to eliminate any and all issues for allergies or possible cross contaminations. Plus, they are very environmentally friendly.

If you are wearing braces, I recommend that you switch to a water flosser for the best clean you can get.

Just make sure to clean the entire machine weekly so that no mold or bacteria grows in the machine itself.

black bag of pink salt and a small sign that reads top mouthwash

Sea Salt – Best Mouthwash

Free from: gluten, wheat, milk, egg, shellfish, fish, peanut, tree nut, celery, sesame, food dyes, xylitol

Contains: No common allergens

We know that rinsing our mouths when having a sore throat is a great remedy, but did you know that including it in your daily routine has even more benefits?

Salt water helps to remove plaque buildup and levels of bacteria in the mouth, helping to prevent tooth decay. The salt water creates an osmosis effect that relieves inflammation in the mouth and neutralizes the acids formed by bacteria in the mouth.

That means it helps to prevent everything from tooth decay to bad breath to gingivitis and even canker sores.

Plus, if you take any inhaled medications for asthma, using a salt water rinse twice a day helps to prevent thrush from overtaking your mouth.

A recent study found that daily use of a sea salt mouthwash, especially in conjunction with xylitol, reduced bacteria in the mouth by a large amount. It reduces plaque buildup in adults by 20% and in kids by up to 40%.

The ADA recommends that you dissolve one teaspoon in a cup of warm water, rinse for 30 seconds, and then spit it into the sink. Don’t swallow this as it is filled with bacteria!

a 4 pack of plastic tongue scrapers in many colors

Tongue Scraper – Bonus Care

Do you brush your tongue? Halitosis, or bad breath, is caused by volatile sulfur compounds, VSCs, that offgas and give us that funky mouth smell. Aside from brushing your teeth, flossing, and rinsing your mouth, you can also remove them directly off your tongue!

I like this one because of the simple shape. It is made from BPA free plastic. Plus, it isn’t metal so I don’t have to worry about a metal allergy either.

After flossing and brushing, I give my tongue a few scrapes twice a day. It has really made a difference!

Dental Appointment Tips

  • When at the dentist, ask that they use powder free gloves. Many times, those gloves are powdered in food starch that can be sourced from wheat, corn, or other starches.
  • Ask for dye free clearing products while at the office.
  • Ask if they use iodine mouth washes and if you can skip or use hydrogen peroxide to rinse your mouth instead.
  • Make sure you have a notecard filled with you/your child’s allergies ready to hand to the front desk and the dentist. Many people have died from anaphylactic reactions to dental care products. It is better to overshare than undershare at the dentist office.
